The City of Dover is the capital of Delaware and is located in central Delaware in
Kent County. While its population is significantly less than
that of Wilmington, Dover encompasses a larger area than any
other city on the Delmarva Peninsula. Around
1900, electricity came to Dover when the water plant became the
Light and Water Plant with the installation of its first steam
generating facility. By
1902, electricity was being produced and sold for commercial
lighting. The City of Dover’s municipal utility continued to
grow beyond the town and presently services nearly 68 square
miles, 45 square miles outside the city limits.
By 2001, the EIA reported that this publicly owned
municipal utility had over 19,500 customers and sold a total of
720,924,000 kWh of electricity.
Presently, the City of Dover offers energy saving information through an
education program entitled No Cost and Low Cost Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bill.
This program offers consumers tips on energy conservation
as well as an economic analysis on the benefits of using compact
fluorescent lights.
The City of Dover has no existing
standardized interconnection or net metering policy.
All customer inquiries regarding grid interconnection are
handled on a case-by-case basis.
The City of Dover generates its own electricity
at the 168 MW McKee Run Electric Generating Station located on
Walker Road and is a member of the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation.
