The City of Milford is located in the
southern part of the state, approximately 18 miles south of
Dover and 20 miles north of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Milford, the “Garden City of the Twin Counties,” has
had an electric system since 1887. The City owns and operates it own electric utility
providing electrical services to commercial and residential
customers in the greater Milford area.
In 2001, the EIA noted that this publicly
owned municipal utility had just over 4,900 customers and sold a
total of 170,335,000 kWh of electricity.
However, the utility reported that the customer base had
increased to 5,200 by October 2003.
Although the City of Milford offers no
renewable energy programs, the City has offered other energy
efficiency programs for more that 6 years.
In addition to the Industrial
Peak Shaving Program and the Radio
Controlled Load Management Program, the utility participates
in various community events providing customers with energy
efficiency and energy conservation education.
The utility’s Residential Radio Controlled Load Management Program has experienced a
23% increase in customer participation over the last 6 years.
The City of Milford has no existing
standardized interconnection policy or net energy metering
policy available for its customers.
All customer inquiries for grid interconnection are managed on a case-by-case basis.
The City of Milford plans to annex land to the northwest and
southeast and estimates 2,600 residential new construction homes
completed over the next 10 years.
The City of Milford is a Delaware Municipal Electric
Corporation member and part owner of the Warren
F. “Sam” Beasley Power Station, the 50 MW peak power
facility located in Smyrna, Delaware.
